In May of this year we attended Popoff’s event at The Troxy Theatre, London, to covertly record his miraculous claims and supposed acts of faith healing, and to witness thousands of people donating large amounts of cash to his ministry.

Today’s Sunday Times features a report on our six-month investigation into ‘faith healer’ Peter Popoff .

At the moment, the whole article is only available to subscribers, but the "Good Thinking" people say more material will be published tomorrow.

Quite surprising to find just how many similar "Faith Seed" scams there are in operation in America - and just how easy it is to set up such a racket in the U.S. and get away with it, legally, by calling it a church.

This hilariously funny video highlights just how crazy the American tax laws are which allow such practices to continue to rake in the dosh, whilst acting perfectly within the law.

The TV Show, 'Last Week Tonight' decided to set up such an establishment, calling it 'The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption'.

I don't normally have this to say for that organisation (the GT crew) - but well done on this occasion!

Popoff has authored 11 books. He made national headlines in 1984 when he campaigned to raise money to smuggle bibles into the Soviet Union. He was questioned about how money was spent and staged a burglary of his headquarters, which he later begged for more money to repair damages.

Popoff declared bankruptcy in 1987 with nearly 800 creditors having claims against him. Before going bankrupt he was said to have been taking in nearly $4 million a year. Popoff reappeared in 1998 and marketed himself to an African American audience on BET. In 2005 his ministry received more than $23 million and Peter took home nearly $1 million. In 2006 he changed Peter Popoff Ministries from a for-profit business to a religious organization becoming tax exempt. The Steve Martin movie Leap of Faith was based on Popoff.

CLARIFICATION AND UPDATE (07/02/16)

We would like to clarify that when Ofcom informed us that the broadcasts were from a company based in Iceland, we forwarded our complaint to Iceland’s Ministry of the Interior. The complaint was upheld because the broadcast was in breach of Article 41 (2) regarding timing of advertisements and teleshopping spots, not because of violations of British laws about truth in advertising.

Following the ruling, the Gospel Channel requested a 4 weeks adjustment time in order to fulfill the contractual engagements related to the Popoff programme. The Board of the Media Commission rejected the request on 3rd February.

We will continue to monitor the situation.
