Ah yes, I remember them moving those buildings as part of the redevelopment of the centre after the IRA bomb in 1996.

There's been a lot of much-needed redevelopment in Manchester over recent years, Tony; the city is barely recognisable. The IRA weren't messing about with that bomb, I heard the blast in Stockport, miles away. Scary times.

Re: Your own photos.
As I recall, there was some regret at the time that the IRA hadn't used an even bigger bomb, then they might have taken out all of the Arndale Centre....
What I missed most was the old Corn Exchange, a huge space filled with quirky little stalls and redolent with the smell of joss sticks - now it's just another glitzy little upmarket shopping mall.

I think most Mancunians would agree that the Arndale Centre was a big mistake. Still, since that was built, developments have generally been of a far higher standard. The introduction of the Metrolink, (trams to you and me), has seen pedestrianisation of much of the inner city and that's a huge improvement.

Belgian wine? :sh
In a foreign country I'm all in favour of drinking whatever the locals drink. Except in Ireland, that is - can't stand Guinness...

In Tink's last picture, on the left hand side, left of the tram tracks and just before the bridge, is an Irish Pub that I've spent many an evening drinking Guinness in!

I DID take a picture but it is so small and BORING! The chocolate ones in the shop next door are better...Dubious Dick wrote:No picture of the most famous Brussels landmark? Of course I mean the Mannequin Pis!
